In a bid to expedite his recovery, Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Blake Snell is set to undergo a pioneering surgical procedure similar to the one that recently benefited Detroit Tigers ace Tarik Skubal. Dodgers general manager Brandon Gomes confirmed on Monday that Snell will have the same semi-experimental surgery to address loose bodies in his left elbow, a condition that has sidelined him since last week.
This latest injury adds Snell to a growing list of Dodgers pitchers dealing with similar ailments, following closer Edwin Díaz’s stint on the injured list earlier in the season for loose bodies in his right elbow. The hope is that this innovative approach will significantly reduce Snell’s recovery time.
Skubal’s surgery, performed by renowned orthopedic surgeon Dr. Neal ElAttrache, utilized a new, smaller surgical scope known as the NanoNeedle Scope 2.0. This advanced tool, which is just 1.9 millimeters in diameter compared to a traditional arthroscope’s 4 millimeters, allows for less invasive procedures. ElAttrache successfully removed a piece of bone from Skubal’s elbow that was roughly the size of a lima bean, all while minimizing the incision size.
Gomes stated that Snell’s procedure is scheduled for Tuesday, and the Dodgers are optimistic that the NanoNeedle technology could shave a month off his anticipated return. ElAttrache further explained the advantages of the NanoNeedle, which has already been used on other professional athletes, including Winnipeg Jets goaltender Connor Hellebuyck, who had a torn meniscus repaired with the tool.
Initially, Skubal faced a recovery timeline of up to two months following his surgery. However, that period has since been revised to just 4-6 weeks, with Skubal already back on the mound for a bullpen session less than two weeks post-operation. He expressed confidence in his recovery, stating, “I’m trying to keep the governor on a little bit… I feel really good and want to let it go. But I’ve been instructed not to.”
Now, the Dodgers will be watching closely as Snell embarks on his own recovery journey. Manager Dave Roberts shared his optimism regarding the procedure, indicating that the team expects a quicker turnaround for Snell. “Expect him certainly back this season. Don’t know really a timetable, but I think just kind of with the MRI, the scans and everything, we feel good about getting sooner rather than later,” Roberts noted.
