Matt Rempe’s Off-Season Transformation
The off-season has been a whirlwind of activity for New York Rangers’ forward Matt Rempe. His tenacity on the ice and frequent skirmishes have made him an unexpected sensation in the bustling city of New York. However, his style of play didn’t sit well with Georges Laraque who saw too many hits to Rempe’s face.
Laraque is no stranger to the rough and tumble of NHL games, having survived more than 150 fights during his decade-long career. His secret? Minimizing the hits to his head. He decided to share his wisdom with Rempe, offering advice over the phone and even spending a few days on the ice, passing on his knowledge about the art of fighting.
An Off-Season of Learning and Improving
This advice was just one aspect of Rempe’s off-season training agenda. His routine also involved daily power skating and working alongside Rangers’ veteran Chris Kreider to improve his skill at tipping pucks in front of the net.
As Rempe gears up for his first full season, he is committed to elevating his game – both with and without his gloves. “My emphasis has been on honing my skills, improving my skating, and becoming an all-around better player,” said Rempe. “This summer has been one of great growth, and I believe I’ve made significant strides.”
Fan-Favorite Rempe
Rempe’s popularity among fans is soaring. His autograph queue was among the longest at Fanatics Fest NYC, a three-day sports festival held in August.
With 28 games of regular-season and playoff experience, and five bouts against some of the sport’s hardest hitters, Rempe is determined to prove that he is more than just a part-time player. According to Laraque, Rempe’s youth, strength, and eagerness to learn could see him evolve into a quality third-liner.
The Power of Rempe
“He’s a force to be reckoned with,” Laraque said. “He has the ability to not only be a physical presence but also a game-changer. His speed and strength are weapon-like, making him a formidable opponent.”
Rempe has been hitting the gym hard to gain additional muscle, aiming to improve his puck management and protection. His ultimate goal is to become a reliable penalty killer, a role he excelled in during his junior career. His team anticipates a significant improvement in his performance in the coming months.
The Love of Rangers Fans
Rempe, who dons No. 73, has quickly cemented his place in the hearts of Rangers fans. His fearless approach to the game and his willingness to throw his fists and body around have earned him a unique place in the fandom. Vincent Trocheck, Rangers’ center, has seen only three names being chanted at Madison Square Garden – Rempe and goalkeepers Igor Shesterkin and Henrik Lundqvist. “The love that Rangers fans have shown for Rempe is unparalleled,” said Trocheck.
The new NHL season will kick off on Wednesday against the Pittsburgh Penguins. The Rangers and their fans are eager to see how Rempe’s off-season of hard work and learning will translate on the ice.
