The Philadelphia Flyers are at a crossroads as they consider bolstering their defensive lineup. With the prospect of blocking one of their young defensemen, the team might be inclined to make a significant free agent signing that aligns with their long-term goals.
Much attention has been given to Tampa Bay Lightning defenseman Darren Raddysh, who is poised to enter free agency after an impressive season that saw him score 70 points in 73 games. However, Raddysh, who will turn 31 in February, has benefited from playing on a power play that boasts stars like Nikita Kucherov and Brayden Point. While he is undoubtedly a talented player, the risks associated with a big-money contract may give the Flyers pause.
On the other hand, there’s another name that has flown under the radar: Rasmus Andersson of the Vegas Golden Knights. At 29, Andersson may not be the youngest option available, but he has demonstrated consistent performance over his career, particularly during his time with the Calgary Flames, where he played on teams that faced both triumphs and struggles.
Andersson has proven to be an effective power play quarterback, racking up three goals and 40 power play points between the 2021-22 and 2022-23 seasons. Although he stands at a modest 6-foot-1 and weighs 200 pounds, he plays with a competitive edge and is considered one of the upper-echelon offensive defensemen in the NHL, despite his point totals not fully reflecting his impact. He excels at generating scoring opportunities and effectively transporting the puck.
However, Andersson does come with his share of challenges. According to JFresh Hockey’s HockeyStats.com, he struggles defensively, ranking in the ninth percentile for pass exits and even lower in preventing possession zone entries. Yet, he performs exceptionally well in most other aspects of the game. Pairing him with current Flyers defenseman Travis Sanheim, both of whom have been deployed similarly as pseudo-No. 1 defensemen, could create a dynamic duo on the blue line.
Regardless of whether it’s Raddysh or Andersson, the Flyers will need to create space for a new addition, likely by parting ways with Rasmus Ristolainen. This is a calculated risk that the organization must embrace to propel their rebuild forward.
Adding to the intrigue is the presence of Dan Vladar, who is expected to sign a lucrative contract extension with the Flyers soon. Vladar, a vocal leader both on and off the ice, could play a pivotal role in attracting Andersson to Philadelphia, as the two were teammates on the Flames from 2021 to 2025.
Moreover, Garnet Hathaway could also be a valuable asset in this pursuit, having played alongside Andersson both on the Flames and during their time with the AHL’s Stockton Heat from 2016 to 2019. The positive experiences that Vladar and Hathaway have had with the Flyers organization only enhance the team’s appeal as a destination for potential signings.
As the offseason approaches, the Flyers are poised to make significant moves, whether through trades or free agency. With connections to Andersson and a solid track record in the NHL, he should certainly be on the Flyers’ radar as they look to strengthen their roster.
