Goldschmidt and Domínguez Power Yankees to Victory Over Tigers

Detroit Tigers

In a matchup against reigning two-time AL Cy Young winner Tarik Skubal, the Yankees knew they needed a strong start to claim victory. They got just that, as their offense made the most of their limited opportunities, scoring runs on key hits despite Skubal’s impressive stretches on the mound.

Paul Goldschmidt set the tone early, working a 3-0 count before crushing a fastball into left field for a 372-foot home run, giving the Yankees a quick 1-0 lead. However, Skubal quickly regained his composure, retiring the next three batters in just seven pitches. The second inning was similarly uneventful for Skubal, apart from a seven-pitch battle with Jazz Chisholm Jr.

The Tigers responded in the bottom of the second against Yankees starter Ryan Weathers. After Riley Greene flew out, Spencer Torkelson doubled a fastball to left, and Hao-Yu Lee drew a walk, putting two runners on with one out. Weathers struck out Ben Malgeri, but Zach McKinstry capitalized on a 2-1 sinker that caught too much of the plate, driving a single up the middle to tie the game at one. Although Weathers struck out Jake Rogers to end the inning, the offense needed to support him.

Goldschmidt was ready to deliver again. Hitting his second homer of the night, he became the Yankees’ only source of offense for a stretch, with the team recording just two hits for a while. Skubal, despite looking like the dominant ace he is, was punished for his mistakes.

The Tigers weren’t finished, as they managed to tie the game once more in the fourth inning. Torkelson led off with a walk, and Lee’s single, aided by a misplay from Jasson Domínguez, allowed Torkelson to advance to third. Malgeri then lifted a sacrifice fly to knot the score at two.

Weathers steadied himself, recording two outs to close the fourth and working around a leadoff double in the fifth. He completed six innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on six hits and two walks, while striking out six. This marked Weathers’ first start without allowing a home run since May 24th, showcasing his return to form.

After Goldschmidt’s second homer in the third, the Yankees’ lineup struggled to get on base until the sixth. With two outs, Ben Rice broke up Skubal’s rhythm with a single, setting the stage for Domínguez. He battled through a nine-pitch at-bat, eventually capitalizing on a mistake pitch and driving it out to left for a two-run homer, giving the Yankees a 4-2 lead.

With the lead in hand, the Yankees’ bullpen took over effectively. Camilo Doval entered the seventh, allowing a walk but securing two pop-ups before giving way to Fernando Cruz, who struck out all four batters he faced. David Bednar closed out the ninth, allowing a single but ultimately securing the victory as Dillon Dingler flew out to Domínguez for the final out.

The Yankees left Detroit with a series win, and they’ll carry this momentum into Boston for a four-game set against their archrivals. Cam Schlittler is set to open the series against Connelly Early, with first pitch scheduled for 7:10 p.m. EST.
