Irving and Thompson Lead Mavericks to Conquer Jazz 110-102
Kyrie Irving racked up 23 points, while Klay Thompson chipped in with 18, propelling the Dallas Mavericks to a 110-102 victory over the Utah Jazz in Monday night’s showdown. The night took a somber turn as Utah Jazz’s forward Taylor Hendricks was escorted off the court on a stretcher after a distressing mid-third quarter fall. The sudden incident, which took place near the baseline beneath Utah’s hoop, left him with a dislocated ankle and a fractured right fibula, according to team reports.
Doncic’s Off Night Sees Mavericks Prevail
Despite an off shooting night, Luke Doncic contributed 15 points, eight assists, and nine rebounds. Irving, who remained without a point until the final 40 seconds of the first quarter, hit two 3-pointers, aiding the defending Western Conference champions in securing their second win in their opening three games.
For the Jazz, Collin Sexton matched Irving’s 23 points, while Lauri Markkanen and Keonte George bolstered Utah’s efforts with 17 points each. Despite their efforts, they couldn’t prevent the Jazz from stumbling to their third consecutive loss, a first since the 2015-16 season.
Shooting Struggles Highlighted
Doncic struggled finding the basket, with only five successful attempts from 22 tries, and a single 3-pointer from nine attempts, only landing in the closing 2:34. The Jazz continued struggling with their shooting, hitting only 37% from the field and 28.6% from downtown, ranking 29th in the NBA.
Among the Mavericks’ stellar trio, Irving was the only one firing accurately from the 3-point range, making 3 of 6 attempts, while Thompson managed 4 from 11.
Dallas’ Decisive Moment and Key Stat
The pivotal moment came when Dallas led 101-95 with under 3 minutes left on the clock. A crucial block from Washington on Kessler was followed by Doncic sinking a 3-pointer, extending Dallas’ lead to nine.
A noteworthy stat from the game was Doncic’s near-miss at a game without a 3-pointer- a rarity he had experienced only once in the previous five games, dating back to last season. During the Mavericks’ 122-84 Game 4 victory over the Boston Celtics in last year’s NBA Finals, he had gone 0 for 8 from beyond the arc.
Looking Forward
The coming Tuesday night sees both teams in action again. The Jazz will welcome the Sacramento Kings at home, while the Mavericks will hit the road to face the Minnesota Timberwolves.
