Jaccob Slavin’s dreams turned into reality on Sunday night as he and the Carolina Hurricanes captured the Stanley Cup, placing him in an elite group of hockey players. Slavin’s achievement makes him the second American and the eighth player overall to win both Olympic gold and the Stanley Cup in the same year. The only other American to boast this impressive feat is Ken Morrow, a member of the legendary 1980 ‘Miracle on Ice’ Olympic team and a key player for the New York Islanders during their dynasty of four consecutive championships.
Morrow reflected on his unique status prior to Slavin’s victory, sharing, “I used to joke I was a trivia question for a lot of years: Who’s the only guy that ever did that? Only player I was at that time, not just American, but the only player.” This year, Slavin joins a distinguished list of Canadian players who have achieved the same, including Steve Yzerman, Brendan Shanahan, Jonathan Toews, Duncan Keith, Brent Seabrook, and Drew Doughty.
William Carrier, one of the original Golden Knights, experienced the heartbreak of losing in the final during Vegas’s inaugural season in 2018. Now, celebrating his own championship with the Golden Knights after defeating Florida in five games, he reflected on the differences in his emotions. “I’m just older,” Carrier noted. “I’m going to enjoy every moment of it. Your first win, everything goes fast. You don’t know what’s going on. So I’m going enjoy this one with the family a lot more.”
Hurricanes goaltender Frederik Andersen, who played through a challenging postseason, was particularly emotional as he celebrated this monumental win. His agent, Claude Lemieux, passed away by suicide on May 28, and Andersen carried his memory with him as he hoisted the Cup. “He would be so proud and all that,” Andersen expressed. “He’s a competitor. He always wanted the best for me, and his players, and his family. It’s tough to really describe how much he has meant to me, and how cool it is to have my name on that trophy with him.”
In a heartfelt moment, Jackson Blake shared the joy of victory with his father, Jason Blake, who played 13 seasons in the NHL without ever winning the Cup. As they embraced, Jackson’s emotions overflowed. “He’s been my right-hand man through it all. I don’t even know why I’m crying, but it’s just unbelievable,” he said. “For him to be here and my whole family to be here, so special. I have no words. When I saw him, something just hit me, so emotional. I didn’t think there were going to be any tears for me, but it’s all good. It’s worth it.”
