For Jaroslav Chmelař, the past year has been nothing short of extraordinary. Selected by the New York Rangers as the 144th overall pick in the fifth round of the 2021 NHL Draft, Chmelař faced the typical challenges that come with breaking into the NHL. However, his perseverance has paid off, culminating in a taste of NHL action this season.
Although he has yet to secure a permanent spot on the Rangers’ roster, the 22-year-old forward has expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to play at the highest level. “Really, really special,” Chmelař remarked about the nine games he has played in the NHL. “If you would have told me that in the summer, I would have told you, ‘I’m going to do my best.’ Now that I’ve been up here a couple of times, it’s a dream come true. Being around the guys, learning from them, and seeing what they do on the ice has been awesome.”
Throughout the 2025-26 campaign, Chmelař has been called up multiple times, with coach Mike Sullivan recognizing him as the Hartford Wolf Pack’s best and most consistent player. Spending the majority of his season in the American Hockey League, Chmelař has thrived in a top-six role, contributing significantly to the Wolf Pack’s success. In 46 games, he has tallied eight goals, 17 assists, and a total of 25 points.
Chmelař’s journey to the NHL has been a testament to his dedication and hard work. “I think it’s just dedication,” he said, reflecting on his progress. “Everybody has that goal, to come up here and stay. I’ve been doing my best the past few years to achieve that goal.” Since joining the Rangers, he has played a bottom-six role, averaging 8:14 minutes in his nine games.
One of the highlights of his young career came on March 5, when he scored his first NHL goal during a 6-2 victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs. Chmelař’s breakaway goal was celebrated exuberantly, showcasing the joy of the moment. “I can’t really describe how special it was. It was insane,” he emphasized. “Scoring the first one at Madison Square Garden, where all the people went crazy, it’s just a feeling I will never forget.”
As the Rangers navigate a period of retooling, as outlined in Chris Drury’s letter to fans, Chmelař and other prospects have a valuable opportunity to showcase their skills and earn a lasting role in New York’s lineup. “Every time I step on the ice, I want to put my name up there, and put the best game for everybody to see,” Chmelař said. “I want to be helpful for teammates, so hopefully good things come out of that.”
