The Toronto Maple Leafs made a significant move to bolster their blue line ahead of free agency, acquiring the rights to defenseman Darren Raddysh from the Tampa Bay Lightning and signing him to an impressive eight-year contract valued at $68 million.
With this deal, Raddysh will carry an $8.5 million cap hit through the 2033-34 season, marking a substantial increase from his previous earnings, as he had never made more than a million dollars in a year until this point.
The 30-year-old defenseman enjoyed a breakout season, achieving career highs of 22 goals, 48 assists, and 70 points in 73 games. Remarkably, this total matches the points he accumulated over the previous two seasons combined since transitioning to a full-time NHL role in 2023.
Raddysh’s addition is a welcome boost for the Leafs, who are under new leadership with coach Jim Hiller and general manager John Chayka, alongside franchise icon Mats Sundin as an adviser. The acquisition came at the cost of a fifth-round pick, representing Chayka’s second trade after recently clearing cap space by dealing goaltender Joseph Woll and defenseman Simon Benoit to Philadelphia.
“We are thrilled to add a defenseman of Darren’s caliber to our organization,” Chayka expressed. “Darren has emerged as one of the NHL’s premier two-way defensemen, combining elite puck-moving ability with poise, competitiveness, and strong play in all three zones. He strengthens our blue line in every situation and is exactly the type of player we want helping lead this team.”
Raddysh’s journey to this point has been anything but conventional. Undrafted despite playing a pivotal role in the Erie Otters’ OHL championship in 2016-17, he signed with the Chicago Blackhawks, was traded to the New York Rangers, and eventually secured a free agent deal with the Lightning in 2021. Much of his early career was spent in the minors, where he earned All-Star honors in the American Hockey League before making a name for himself in Tampa Bay. Last season, he excelled as the Lightning faced injury challenges, leading all NHL defensemen with 10 power-play goals.
