Nicolas Roy is set to make his return to the Western Conference after being traded by the Toronto Maple Leafs to the Colorado Avalanche on Wednesday afternoon. In exchange, the Maple Leafs will receive a conditional first-round pick in 2027 and a conditional fifth-round pick in 2026.
In their official announcement, Toronto detailed the conditions attached to the two picks: if Colorado’s 2027 first-round selection falls within the top ten of the NHL Draft, the Avalanche will send their unprotected 2028 first-round pick to the Maple Leafs. Additionally, Colorado currently holds three fifth-round selections in the 2026 NHL Draft, and the lowest of those will be transferred to Toronto as part of the deal.
Roy joined the Maple Leafs this summer after a series of trades that saw Mitch Marner move to the Vegas Golden Knights. The 29-year-old forward is under contract for one more season, with an annual average value of $3 million. During his time with Toronto, Roy played in 59 games, primarily as a third-line center, where he notched five goals and 20 points, ranking 11th on the team in scoring.
Maple Leafs general manager Brad Treliving has effectively recouped a first-round pick, having previously traded it to the Philadelphia Flyers for Scott Laughton at last season’s trade deadline. This latest move also leaves Toronto with two fifth-round picks in the upcoming draft.
Despite the trade, Roy was in the Maple Leafs’ lineup for their 4-3 shootout loss against the New Jersey Devils on Wednesday night, even as teammates Bobby McMann, Scott Laughton, and Oliver Ekman-Larsson were held out for “roster management” reasons. Now, Roy joins a formidable Avalanche squad eager to contend for another Stanley Cup title, having already won the championship with the Golden Knights in 2023.
Reflecting on the trade rumors earlier in the day, Roy expressed his focus on the present, stating, “Yeah, in that sense, obviously, I have a lot of playoff experience playing in Vegas for a while. But I’m just trying to focus on tonight. I’m playing for the Leafs now and I want to be here.”
