Mavrik Bourque Aims to Shine with Nashville Predators After Trade

Nashville Predators

Mavrik Bourque’s trajectory in the NHL has mirrored the swift brilliance of a shooting star. Just two seasons ago, he was lighting up the AHL with 77 points in 71 games for the Texas Stars, yet he received only one call-up to Dallas. Now, after being traded to the Nashville Predators in exchange for Fedor Svechkov and Zach L’Heureux, Bourque finds himself on the cusp of a middle-six role, poised to provide crucial depth for a Predators team looking to strengthen its center position.

“I have to show up and be able to deliver for the role I’m in,” Bourque expressed. He is confident that showcasing his skills will position him favorably in Nashville. His recent performance reflects that potential; in the 2024-25 season, he was a full-time player in Dallas, participating in 73 games and tallying 25 points. The subsequent season saw him play all 82 games, culminating in a career-high 41 points, including 20 goals and 21 assists.

It’s remarkable to consider that during his time with the Stars, Bourque was often playing out of position. “I’ve played center my entire life except for last year, so I’m looking forward to having a shot down the middle and showing what I can do,” he noted, adding that he knows how to improve his game to excel in the NHL center role.

Drafted 30th overall in the NHL Draft, Bourque returned to Shawinigan for two additional junior seasons, where he not only showcased his talent but also helped lead his team to a QMJHL championship. His journey continued with Texas, where he was familiar with the environment, having played six games there at the end of the 2020-21 season. Each season brought new challenges, which Bourque embraced wholeheartedly.

Reflecting on his early NHL experiences, Bourque said, “I was playing mostly fourth line in my first NHL season and playing on the PK. I was coming from an offensive season in the AHL to the NHL, where I was playing mostly defensive minutes. In my second season, I played more offense and had a bigger role with some key guys leaving. I feel like I’ve been in a lot of situations in the NHL, even in two years.” This diverse experience made him an appealing option for the Predators as they sought to bolster their center depth.

Chris MacFarland, assessing Bourque’s potential, remarked, “He’s a smart, heady hockey player. He’s a good two-way guy that we think the arrow is still pointing up for. We intend to give him every shot at playing in the middle.” With a six-year, $33 million contract now signed, Bourque is committed to Nashville and eager to demonstrate that the investment was well-placed. “I’m just excited and looking forward to showing them why they gave me that contract,” he concluded, ready to make his mark with the Predators.
