Plans to Build a Cutting-Edge Basketball Training Facility

Towns shared his vision on Thursday of establishing a modern basketball training facility in the country. The establishment will offer children premiere coaching, physical therapy, classroom space, meeting areas, and more. The groundbreaking for this ambitious project in Santiago, Dominican Republic, is projected for next year, with a hopeful completion date in 2026.

Living the American Dream Through a Different Lens

Towns, a four-time All-Star and twice All-NBA selectee entering his tenth professional season with the Timberwolves, stated, “I’ve been very fortunate to live the American dream.” However, through his mother’s experiences, Towns has a unique perspective on what it means to feel American. He aims to bring the resources available in America to the Dominican Republic, providing children with the best equipment and opportunities to pursue their dreams and support their families.

Paying Tribute to a Beloved Mother

Jacqueline Cruz-Towns, the woman who instilled values of faith, family, sacrifice, and diligence in Towns, passed away in April 2020 due to Covid-19 complications. The upcoming facility, a collaboration with GO Ministries and World Youth Clubs, will be constructed in her homeland, underscoring the meaningful connection between Towns’ philanthropic efforts and his mother’s legacy.

Contributing to the Community and Beyond

Towns has consistently represented the Dominican Republic in numerous international tournaments since 2011, including a standout performance at the 2023 World Cup in the Philippines. The basketball facility is part of a larger complex, including two soccer fields, four baseball fields, covered outdoor basketball and volleyball courts, and an educational facility.

Building Blocks for the Future

Towns acknowledges that it has taken time to find the right individuals to implement the programs. Now that the foundation is set, he is looking forward to actualizing the plan. His mother, a devout woman who instilled in him the importance of helping others, would undoubtedly approve.

Towns envisions the facility as a safe haven for children who lack resources. “To be able to give these kids a chance to dream and to really think of the dream… this is amazing.” He hopes to inspire these children to learn life skills, social skills, and to cultivate passion and determination, regardless of whether they become professional athletes or not.
