Chris Wideman Ends His Glorious NHL Career

In a significant development for hockey enthusiasts, Chris Wideman, the seasoned defenseman, recently declared his retirement from professional hockey in the National Hockey League (NHL). After dedicating six fruitful seasons to the sport, Wideman, aged 34, took a break last season owing to a back injury.

Wideman’s Last Stint with Montreal Canadiens

As an unrestricted free agent, Wideman’s most recent performance was with the Montreal Canadiens in the 2022-23 season. Here, he showcased his skills by contributing six assists and setting a personal best with 81 penalty minutes in 46 matches.

Wideman Announces Retirement

In a public statement released via the Canadiens, Wideman shared his decision to retire from professional hockey. “Following significant reflection, I’ve concluded that it’s in the best interest of my health and family to step away from professional hockey,” stated Wideman. Despite numerous attempts at rehabilitation and various treatments, it was clear that a return to the game he cherished was not feasible.

Wideman’s Career Highlights

Throughout his career, Wideman amassed 78 points, including 20 goals and 58 assists, in a total of 291 professional games. His journey took him to teams like the Ottawa Senators, Edmonton Oilers, Florida Panthers, and Canadiens. Wideman was a fourth-round pick for the Senators in the 2009 NHL draft.

Wideman’s Future Plans

Expressing his gratitude for having lived his childhood dream of playing in the NHL, Wideman stated, “It’s still uncertain how I’ll remain connected to the game I deeply love. However, just as I’ve done throughout my career, I’m confident I’ll find a way.”
