Notable Players to Reconsider in Your Fantasy Basketball Draft

Reassessing Top Names for Your Fantasy Basketball Roster

Fantasy basketball can be a tricky game of strategy and luck, where player selection often boils down to personal preferences, trust levels, and the players’ performance records. Oftentimes, I find myself steering clear of certain players, mainly due to concerns about their consistency and injury histories. In head-to-head leagues, having key players frequently miss games can be detrimental to your success – particularly if these players were your early draft picks. Let’s dive into five high-profile players that I am likely to sidestep in the upcoming draft, beginning with one of the most renowned for missing games over the last two decades.

The Risks of Drafting Joel Embiid, C, Philadelphia 76ers

Observing Embiid’s performance for the USA team at the Olympics was quite agonizing, given his notorious injury record. With Paul George’s arrival in Philadelphia and Tyrese Maxey’s potential to ascend to another level, Embiid might find it challenging to keep pace. The 76ers require a fit Embiid for a successful playoff run, but his propensity for “load management” adds another layer of risk for the next season. Despite his impressive fantasy stats on-court, his reliability is questionable. His injury history and ambiguous role in the team dynamics make him an uncertain bet for my fantasy team this season.

Jimmy Butler, SG/SF/PF, Miami Heat: A Risky Proposition

While Jimmy Butler, better known as “Playoff Jimmy”, has his moments, his inconsistency is a concern for fantasy team owners. His performance in the last season didn’t leave Miami Heat fans impressed, and his track record of missing about a game every ten days does not inspire confidence. The chances of him delivering a satisfying return on investment, considering his unreliable availability, seem slim. With potential rising stars like Jaime Jaquez Jr., Nikola Jovic, and Tyler Herro in the mix, Butler’s performance could disappoint.

Kawhi Leonard, SF/PF, LA Clippers: A Fantasy Rollercoaster

Even though Leonard was in great form last season, a sudden knee injury right before the fantasy playoffs left many fantasy team owners disappointed. His health status remains uncertain, and his game attendance over the past seven seasons is inconsistent at best. While losing Paul George as a teammate might give Leonard a push, his volatile performance is an enormous risk. It would be wise to let other team owners take that gamble.

Jayson Tatum, SF/PF, Boston Celtics: A Potential Overreach

Although Jayson Tatum has proven to be a strong player, his stats do not justify his frequent selection in the first round of fantasy drafts. Based on his projected statistics, Tatum is better suited as a third-round pick. While he is an excellent player, his projected numbers of 27.5 points, 8.2 rebounds, 4.8 assists, 1.0 steals, 0.6 blocks, and 3.1 3-pointers fall short when considering a potential first-round pick.

Domantas Sabonis, PF/C, Sacramento Kings: A Limited Contribution

Sabonis is known for his triple-double threat on the court. However, his performance in certain aspects, like shot blocking and stealing, leaves much to be desired. His free throw performance last season was less than stellar, and his addition of steals, blocks, and 3-pointers to his stat line was minimal. Additionally, the arrival of DeMar DeRozan to the Kings adds another layer of uncertainty. If you’re comfortable with drafting a big man early who doesn’t guarantee blocks, steals, and triples, Sabonis is your pick. However, it’s worth noting that winning a fantasy league with Sabonis as one of your top picks could be challenging.
