Extra Innings Drama at Citi Field
The Mets and Pirates engaged in another nail-biting extra innings showdown, but unlike the previous night, the home team fell short this time, losing 4-3 in ten innings. The game was characterized by tense moments and standout performances, but ultimately, it was the Pirates who emerged victorious.
Things started off rocky for Mets pitcher Nolan McLean, who struggled to find his rhythm in the first inning. He walked the first two batters he faced, but managed to strike out the next hitter. However, Ryan O’Hearn followed with a bloop single to left, putting the Pirates on the scoreboard. In contrast, Pirates’ starter Carmen Mlodzinski struck out the side in the bottom of the first, showcasing his dominance early on.
After McLean settled down with a quick 1-2-3 inning in the second, the Mets found their footing. Luis Robert, greeted with cheers from the Citi Field crowd after his heroics the night before, hit a one-out single that trickled past third baseman Nick Gonzales. Brett Baty followed with a single of his own, moving Robert to third, and Marcus Semien tied the game with a sacrifice fly. The Mets threatened to take the lead but could not capitalize as Jared Triolo’s error allowed Carson Benge to reach base, only for Luis Torrens to strike out and end the inning.
The Pirates quickly regained the advantage in the third, courtesy of a solo home run from Brandon Lowe, who has been a thorn in the Mets’ side throughout the series. This marked the first home run McLean had surrendered to a left-handed batter in the majors. Mlodzinski continued to shine, striking out the side again in the third, while McLean responded with a clean inning in the fourth. The Mets attempted to rally in the bottom of the fourth with back-to-back singles from Robert and Baty, but failed to score.
In the fifth, McLean found himself in a tight spot but managed to limit the damage after allowing a double to Lowe. He struck out Bryan Reynolds and Ryan O’Hearn to escape the inning, finishing his outing with eight strikeouts over five innings. The Mets tied the game again in the bottom of the fifth when Francisco Lindor hit a triple off the wall in right-center, followed by Juan Soto’s RBI single, bringing the score to 2-2. However, former Met Yohan Ramírez came in to retire Bo Bichette and Jorge Polanco, halting the Mets’ momentum.
Huascar Brazobán dominated in the sixth, needing only five pitches to retire the Pirates, and recorded the first two outs in the seventh before handing the ball to Sean Manaea. Although Manaea struggled with his velocity, he managed to navigate a tricky situation, allowing a single to Oneil Cruz and making a costly throwing error. Yet, he escaped unscathed thanks to a sharp play by Semien. The Mets threatened again in the seventh, but Mason Montgomery struck out Soto and Bichette back-to-back, preserving the tie.
As the game progressed, both teams battled fiercely, with neither able to capitalize on scoring opportunities. Isaac Mattson pitched a flawless eighth for Pittsburgh, while Luke Weaver worked around a pair of walks to keep the game scoreless for the Mets in the ninth. With the game tied at three, the Mets sent Dicky Lovelady to the mound in the tenth, a decision that backfired. Lovelady allowed a single to O’Hearn, who scored the ghost runner. Although Lovelady induced a double play from Triolo, he struggled thereafter, walking two batters before Henry Davis delivered a pivotal RBI single, extending the Pirates’ lead to 4-2.
With the Mets trailing in the bottom of the tenth and the top of the order up, Francisco Lindor drew a walk, igniting hopes for a comeback. Juan Soto followed with a double into the left-center gap, scoring one run, but disaster struck as Lindor was tagged out at home while attempting to score the tying run. Bichette grounded out for the second out, but Polanco came to the plate with a chance to tie it. He connected with a deep fly ball to right field, but the Pirates’ Billy Cook made a spectacular catch against the wall, sealing the win for Pittsburgh.
