Pirates Shine in Grapefruit League with Impressive Offense and Pitching

MLB Baseball News

The Pittsburgh Pirates are making waves in this year’s Spring Training Grapefruit League, boasting an impressive 9-2 record following their recent 4-1 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays. Currently riding a five-game winning streak, the Pirates hold the best record across all of Spring Training. While it’s still early and the regular season hasn’t commenced, the Bucs appear to have addressed one of their long-standing issues: scoring runs.

With 65 runs scored over their 11 games, averaging nearly 6 runs per contest, the Pirates rank third in the Grapefruit League. Their impressive +31 run differential is also second-best in the league, showcasing their offensive prowess.

Last season, the Pirates struggled with power, but this Spring Training, they have already hit 13 home runs, placing them in a tie for ninth across Major League Baseball. Top prospect Konnor Griffin leads the charge with three home runs, while Yordany De Los Santos has contributed two. Oneil Cruz, Ryan O’Hearn, Endy Rodriguez, and Jhostynxon Garcia have each added a home run, alongside contributions from a few players who may not make the Major League roster this year.

The team’s batting average of .274 is a significant improvement, especially considering their dismal .231 average in 2025, which ranked third-worst in the Majors. Nick Gonzales, along with Cruz and Garcia, has been particularly impressive, hitting .538 over 5 and 6 games, respectively, leading the team in batting average.

Combining above-average hitting with one of the league’s top pitching staffs, the Pirates are also excelling on the mound. They currently rank second in Spring Training for ERA, third in team WHIP, fifth in strikeouts, and second in opposing team batting average. While none of this is completely surprising, it does raise questions about how effective the Bucs could be with consistent hitting, and this Spring provides a promising glimpse.

Though it’s still very early in the season, if the Pirates can carry their Spring Training success into the regular season, they could find themselves back in the MLB spotlight for all the right reasons.
