The Buffalo Sabres kicked off their four-game Western road trip with a strong performance, shutting out the Vegas Golden Knights 2-0 at T-Mobile Arena. Josh Doan found the back of the net late in the first period, while goaltender Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen stood tall with 29 saves to secure the victory. An empty-net goal from Josh Norris sealed the win, marking Buffalo’s 10th triumph following the Olympic break and maintaining their four-point lead over Tampa Bay, who also won against Seattle on Tuesday.
Head coach Lindy Ruff shared his thoughts on the game and provided an update on forward Zach Benson, who took a high hit from former Sabre Brayden McNabb midway through the third period. “I thought we worked really hard, but we were a little sloppy in the first period. I really liked the second, and in the third period, we played the game the right way. I probably wish we would have shot a little more in some odd-numbered situations we created, but overall, the game had a playoff feel to it,” he said.
Ruff also reflected on the team’s ability to maintain a one-goal lead for over 40 minutes, emphasizing the importance of extending that lead. “We had a couple of good opportunities, and I thought our goaltender had a heck of a night keeping Vegas at bay. Both goaltenders made big saves at crucial moments, but I liked the way we played in the third. We only gave up one real big opportunity, and that’s a hard win against a good team.”
When discussing Luukkonen’s performance, Ruff praised the young goaltender’s control of the crease. “He was really in control of his crease. He was aggressive when he needed to be, and he read a couple of plays well, making a big save on a (Jack) Eichel shot during a five-on-six situation. He got there in time to make the save,” he noted.
Regarding the hit on Benson, Ruff mentioned a conversation with the referee who deemed it legal. “I argued about that point, but I lost. Those are tough ones. The hit was a little familiar for me, and I don’t like it. I need to look at it again, but I thought it looked a little late. You really want to try to protect your players. Zach just got the wind knocked out of him,” he explained.
As the Sabres continue to navigate a competitive landscape, Ruff acknowledged the challenges ahead. “We’re still in one heck of a battle. When you look at the standings, a lot of guys haven’t been in this position before, and you wonder how they’ll handle the pressure points in the game. I thought we did a nice job during the five-on-six, and the composure we showed in the neutral zone to get the puck to Norris for an easy empty-net goal was a good sign. I think the team is starting to believe in how we need to play with the lead, and we’ve proven we can win a lot of games that way.”
