Ha-Seong Kim, Star Shortstop, to Miss Padres’ Postseason Following Shoulder Surgery

The San Diego Padres’ postseason campaign will proceed without the involvement of their starting shortstop, Ha-Seong Kim. On Saturday, Kim announced his decision to have season-ending surgery to mend a torn labrum in his right shoulder.

Kim, set to celebrate his 29th birthday on October 17, may have played his final game for the Padres, as he becomes a free agent after this season. The four-season veteran sustained a shoulder injury on August 18 while attempting to return to first base during a game against the Colorado Rockies.

Kim Expresses Frustration Over Season-Ending Injury

Through his interpreter, David Lee, Kim expressed his disappointment and frustration. “I tried everything possible to make a comeback and support my team,” Kim shared. “However, my physical health did not cooperate with my mental determination. It appears my season has come to an abrupt end. It’s particularly distressing because we have a real shot at the postseason, and I really wanted to contribute.”

The Padres, who recently secured home-field advantage for their National League wild-card series by defeating the Arizona Diamondbacks, shifted Xander Bogaerts back to shortstop and Jake Cronenworth to second base following Kim’s injury.

Kim’s Hopes for a Season Comeback

There was optimism earlier this week that Kim could return this season. He participated in a rehab game at the Padres’ spring training complex in Peoria, Arizona, missing the team’s playoff clinch celebration at Dodger Stadium.

Kim explained, “My decision to go to Arizona was fueled by hope that I could make a comeback. Despite playing in a rehab game, the pain persisted. After numerous discussions, we concluded that surgery is the next best step.”

Kim’s Four-Year Tenure with the Padres

Since joining the Padres from South Korea in 2021, Kim has had an impressive run, hitting .242 with 47 home runs, 78 stolen bases, and 200 RBIs in 540 games. In the previous season, he bagged the NL utility Gold Glove Award.

When questioned about his return to the field, Kim asserted his primary focus is on recovery and being prepared for the 2025 season.

Fond Memories and Hopes for the Padres

Kim expressed his deep admiration for San Diego, his team, and the fans. “San Diego is a significant part of my life, given my four-season stint with them,” Kim said. “Every year, we strived for the World Series trophy, creating beautiful memories. The team is like a second family to me.”

He concluded, “I believe we stand a real chance to win it all this year. Even though I won’t be on the field, I will wholeheartedly support them throughout this journey.”
