Senators Sign Goalie Lucas Beckman, Who’s Dominating QMJHL Playoffs

The Ottawa Senators have added another promising talent to their roster, announcing the signing of Lucas Beckman to a three-year entry-level contract. The 18-year-old goalie, who has been a standout for the Chicoutimi Saguenéens, is currently enjoying a remarkable playoff run in the QMJHL.

Beckman has been nearly unbeatable, boasting an impressive 8-0 record along with a staggering .962 save percentage and a minuscule 0.75 goals against average during the playoffs. Throughout his first six games, he allowed just one goal in each outing and capped off the series with two shutouts, leading the Saguenéens to a decisive sweep over the Québec Remparts.

Since his trade from Baie-Comeau to Chicoutimi in December, Beckman has transformed his game, losing only once in his last 22 appearances, with an outstanding combined record of 21-1 across both the regular season and playoffs. In stark contrast, his former team, the Drakkar, finished at the bottom of the league standings.

Drafted in the fourth round (97th overall) by the Senators during the 2025 NHL Draft in Los Angeles, Beckman is now on the radar for Hockey Canada as a potential candidate for the World Juniors this Christmas. His time at the Senators’ development camp last summer gave him the chance to experience higher-level play, which he believes has positively impacted his performance this season.

“The shots here are coming a lot quicker, the speed is better, and I think it means that when I go back to junior, it’s going to feel a bit more slow motion (by comparison), and I’m going to be able to kind of be ahead of the play more,” Beckman shared, revealing his insights on the transition to a more competitive environment.

With his sights set on being the best goalie in the QMJHL, Beckman expressed his ambition with a mix of confidence and determination. “My personal goal would be to be the best goalie in the Q,” he stated. “That might sound a little overconfident, but I think I’m able to. We’ll see.” So far, his performance speaks volumes.

Beckman is the fifth Senators prospect to sign an entry-level contract in the past month, joining Blake Montgomery (F, Wisconsin), Hoyt Stanley (D, Cornell), Kevin Reidler (G, Penn State), and Gabriel Eliasson (D, Barrie).
