Sharks Secure Kiefer Sherwood with Five-Year, $28.75 Million Extension

San Jose Sharks

The San Jose Sharks have made a significant commitment to forward Kiefer Sherwood, signing him to a five-year, $28.75 million contract extension just six weeks after acquiring him from Vancouver. This move comes as the Sharks aim to solidify their roster ahead of the upcoming trade deadline.

On January 19, the Sharks traded two second-round draft picks in 2026 and 2027 along with minor league defenseman Cole Clayton to bring the 30-year-old Sherwood to San Jose. General manager Mike Grier expressed enthusiasm about Sherwood’s future with the team, stating, “We are very excited to have Kiefer remain in San Jose and be part of the group that we are building. The ingredients he brings to our lineup on a nightly basis blend extremely well with the skill sets of his teammates, and we look forward to his contributions in the years to come.”

Sherwood’s extension comes on the heels of a strong performance, having scored his first goal in five games for the Sharks during a recent power play that secured a win against Montreal. Despite being sidelined by injury upon his arrival, he has managed to contribute one goal and one assist in his five games with the Sharks. Prior to the trade, Sherwood was a standout for the Canucks, leading the team with 17 goals in their first 48 games, adding six assists to his tally.

As of Wednesday, the Sharks are riding a three-game winning streak and are just outside playoff contention with 64 points in 59 games. Edmonton currently occupies the final wild-card spot with 68 points from 62 games, while Seattle sits in third place in the Pacific Division with 67 points in 60 games.

Throughout his career, Sherwood has accumulated 61 goals and 62 assists over 314 games, with 47 of those goals coming since the beginning of the 2023-24 season.
