Jacob deGrom’s Anticipation for His MLB Comeback
In the early hours of September 13, 2024, there’s a good chance that Texas Rangers’ pitcher, Jacob deGrom, will be staring at the ceiling, battling insomnia. This two-time Cy Young Award recipient has spent 11 years in the major leagues, and the night before a big game has always been a restless one for him. As he gears up for his first start in 503 days against the Seattle Mariners, deGrom’s pre-pitch jitters are expected to reach unprecedented levels. Despite the nervous anticipation, he remains hopeful for a good night’s rest. “Sleep has always been elusive on the eve of a game, but I’m optimistic about tonight,” shares deGrom. “It feels like ages since I’ve been out there. I’m thrilled to return and eagerly await tomorrow’s game.”
DeGrom’s Journey through Tommy John Surgery
DeGrom’s return marks his first game since undergoing Tommy John surgery in April 2023. This was the second time he had to endure this procedure, having gone through the same surgery as a minor leaguer in 2010. Texas Rangers’ General Manager, Chris Young, acknowledges the tenacity and perseverance deGrom has demonstrated throughout his recovery, having experienced grueling rehabilitation phases in his own career. “Witnessing their journey from surgery to rehab and dealing with the routine that comes with it, and then finally seeing them back on the field, knowing the sweat and sacrifice they’ve invested – it is truly a celebratory moment,” Young expresses.
Exciting Starts for the Rangers
DeGrom’s comeback isn’t the only event stirring up excitement in the Rangers’ camp this week. Promising rookie Kumar Rocker is set to make his eagerly awaited MLB debut, while three-time Cy Young winner Max Scherzer is preparing for his first start since the end of July. The announcement of these three starts has set a wave of anticipation among team members and fans alike. “The buzz surrounding these three starts is tangible,” says manager Bruce Bochy. “We are all thrilled to see them in action. While Scherzer’s future remains uncertain, deGrom and Rocker hold promising roles in our team’s future. It’s great to see them fit and ready to pitch.”
DeGrom’s Determination to Regain his Stride
After a 16-month hiatus from the big leagues, deGrom is keen to prove he’s still got what it takes. “The journey felt long, transitioning from live batting practice to rehab starts, but we saw the light at the end of the tunnel,” deGrom explains. “Finally being here, it’s going to be a thrilling day for me.”
