Rising Star Bobby Witt Jr. Drives Royals to Playoff Triumph Over Orioles
As the long-awaited playoff debut of Bobby Witt Jr. for the Kansas City Royals unfolded, he paused to drink in the electric atmosphere at Camden Yards on Tuesday. On a dreary afternoon, the stadium was lit up by 41,506 passionate fans, mostly cheering for the home team, the Baltimore Orioles. Witt Jr. admitted that the scene was what baseball dreams are made of.
Witt Jr. Exhibits Star Power in Playoff Debut
Proving his worth as one of the most promising young talents in the game, Witt brought in the only run of the game with a single on Tuesday. This run, backed by six powerful innings from fellow playoff debutant Cole Ragans, gave the Royals a 1-0 victory over the Orioles in the first game of their AL Wild Card Series.
Michael Massey of the Royals praised Witt, the 24-year-old shortstop who topped the major league with 211 hits and a .332 batting average this season, for his leadership and offensive prowess.
Witt’s Key Hit Seals Game for Royals
In the sixth inning, Witt seized the opportunity to drive the ball through the infield off a 95 mph, first-pitch cutter from 2021 NL Cy Young Award winner Corbin Burnes. While Burnes had previously used this pitch to get Witt out twice, this time Witt found his mark.
Garcia, another playoff newcomer, scored the game-winning run after drawing a walk, stealing second, and advancing to third on a groundout. Witt, Garcia, and Lucas Erceg, who earned a four-out save, represent the rising wave of talent propelling the Royals back to October baseball for the first time since their 2015 World Series win.
Royals Eying AL Division Series
With the momentum in their favour, the Royals now stand poised to wrap up this best-of-three series and advance to an AL Division Series against the New York Yankees with a victory in Game 2 in Baltimore on Wednesday. Kansas City is sending All-Star Seth Lugo to the mound to face off against Zach Eflin.
Stellar Performances from Ragans and Burnes
Ragans, despite having to leave the game after 80 pitches due to cramping in his left calf, put on a stellar show, allowing only four hits and striking out eight. Meanwhile, Burnes lived up to his reputation as the ace Baltimore had hoped for when they acquired him from Milwaukee in February.
Orioles’ Sluggers Fall Short
Despite their best efforts, Baltimore’s power hitters, who ranked second only to the Yankees in home runs this season, could not break through. They had opportunities in both the third and fifth innings but couldn’t capitalize, leaving the stage clear for Witt and the Royals to steal the show.
Looking Ahead to Game 2
As the Royals and Orioles prepare for Game 2, all eyes will be on Lugo making his first postseason start. On the other side, Eflin, with a combined 10-9 record and a 3.59 ERA for Tampa Bay and Baltimore in 2024, will be looking to help the Orioles bounce back.
