Tigers Triumph Over Guardians, Claiming 2-1 Lead in AL Division Series
The Detroit Tigers, with key contributions from Riley Greene and Spencer Torkelson, overpowered the Cleveland Guardians in a 3-0 victory on Wednesday. The win placed the Tigers, who have been the MLB’s most riveting team for the past two months, in pole position to make their first American League Championship Series appearance since 2013. Game 4 is slated for Thursday night at Comerica Park.
Guardians Struggle to Score
Cleveland’s offense faltered, marking 20 consecutive innings without a run since their explosive start to the series with a 7-0 victory. Steven Kwan was a notable exception, contributing three of the six hits for the Guardians in Game 3.
Strong Pitching Keeps Guardians at Bay
Following the shutout delivered by AL Cy Young Award favorite Tarik Skubal in Game 2, Detroit’s manager A.J. Hinch employed a strategic rotation of pitchers to maintain the quietude of the Guardians’ bats in Game 3.
Tigers’ Fans Bring the Roar
The electrifying atmosphere was palpable in Comerica Park, with the largest crowd in its 25-year history—44,885 strong—cheering on the Tigers, their voices echoing throughout the stadium.
Detroit’s Defensive Prowess
Detroit’s defense was also on point, with a vital play by third baseman Matt Vierling in the seventh inning, preventing a potential run by the Guardians.
Guardians’ Offense Fails to Deliver
Although the Guardians’ pitchers managed to keep the AL Central champions in the game, their lack of offensive power proved to be their downfall. The team went 0 for 8 with runners in scoring position, failing to capitalize on their opportunities.
Tigers’ Offense Shines
In contrast, Detroit’s offense was firing on all cylinders. Torkelson delivered a crucial RBI double in the sixth inning, breaking his 0 for 14 streak with nine strikeouts in the postseason. “In the playoffs you don’t get caught up in the numbers, you’re just trying to win and we’re doing that,” Torkelson said. “It felt pretty good to come through there.”
