Tocchet Urges Flyers to Quickly Adapt Ahead of Game 2 Against Hurricanes

Philadelphia Flyers

In the wake of a tough start to their second-round playoff series, Philadelphia Flyers coach Rick Tocchet is calling for swift adjustments as his team prepares for Game 2 against the Carolina Hurricanes. The Flyers faced a daunting challenge in the series opener, which ended in a 3-0 defeat that highlighted their struggles against the Hurricanes’ aggressive style of play.

“You can’t have three or four games like that,” Tocchet remarked before practice, emphasizing the need for his players to quickly find their footing. “Tomorrow night we want 21 guys wanting the puck. That’s the mindset.” The Flyers were unable to generate meaningful pressure on Carolina goaltender Frederik Andersen, managing just nine shots through the first two periods and failing to capitalize on four power-play opportunities.

Statistically, the Hurricanes held a significant advantage, boasting 17 scoring chances to the Flyers’ seven at even strength and a 5-2 lead in high-danger chances, according to Natural Stat Trick. The absence of Owen Tippett, who led the team in goals during the regular season, due to an unspecified injury, certainly did not help the Flyers’ cause. Tippett is considered day-to-day and was seen skating during practice, albeit separately from the team.

Tocchet acknowledged that the challenges faced in Game 1 extended beyond Tippett’s injury. Despite adjusting his lines in search of a spark, the damage was done as Carolina took a commanding 2-0 lead by the midway point of the second period. “To me, it was the first 15 minutes where we — just watching the video — it didn’t look like a whole lot of guys wanted the puck,” Tocchet said, stressing the importance of being proactive against a team like Carolina.

“I just said, ‘We’ve got to hit singles every shift, can’t try to hit home runs,’” Tocchet explained. “A lot of guys are either all-in on a home run or not skating.” This baseball analogy resonated with defenseman Cam York, who had previously scored the overtime winner in the first round against Pittsburgh. “They’re on top of you and super aggressive,” York noted. “But if you can use the middle of the ice, you can use that against them pretty well and get a bunch of odd-man looks. We’ve just got to reset, refocus and get ready for the next one.”
