Tomas Hertl Embraces Second Chance at Stanley Cup Glory

NHL Hockey News

Tomas Hertl is acutely aware that time is not on his side when it comes to chasing the elusive Stanley Cup. Now at 32, he is fully committed to seizing what could be one of his final opportunities to lift the coveted trophy. The memories of his first taste of the Final in 2016 still linger, when the San Jose Sharks advanced to the championship series only to fall short against the Pittsburgh Penguins. That experience was particularly bitter for Hertl, who was sidelined due to injury during crucial moments of the series.

In the years that followed, Hertl faced further disappointments. The Sharks were ousted by the Golden Knights in the Western Conference Final the next season, followed by another conference final exit against the St. Louis Blues. Last season, Hertl’s playoff journey with the Golden Knights ended once again in the conference finals, this time at the hands of the Edmonton Oilers. After all these near-misses, Hertl’s resolve to make the most of his second chance has never been stronger.

Following his game-winning goal in Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Final, Hertl expressed his determination to capitalize on this opportunity. “Obviously, you don’t waste it,” he stated during the postgame interview. “It’s still a lot of game(s) left, (but) it’s a great start (to) the series.” His late third-period shot from the slot propelled the Golden Knights to a thrilling 5-4 victory, marking a historic comeback as the first road team to overcome a multi-goal deficit in Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Final in 56 games.

“It was awesome,” Hertl reflected on the game. “The building buzzing. Obviously, we didn’t have the greatest start, but it’s kind of been our story all season, but we never give up. We just a team, it doesn’t matter, we up or down, we just keep playing. We come strong in the second and the third and turn it around and big win in the first game.” After enduring a 29-game scoring drought earlier in the season, Hertl has turned a corner, netting four goals in the last eight games, including two game-winners.

Golden Knights coach John Tortorella praised Hertl’s growth during their time together. “I think he’s grown. He never stopped working. I thought there were some major struggles in his game, but he never stopped working at his game. It’s just great timing, just to try to balance our lineup. He has given us some very important minutes.” Hertl recognizes the significance of each player’s contributions at this stage of the playoffs, which is why he has remained focused, even during the pregame moments when the Stanley Cup was brought onto the ice. “I try to put head down and don’t think about it because it’s ultimate goal and chasing for a long time,” he said. “I have second shot in my career.”
