Jersey No. 44 to Stand as a Symbol of Tribute

The Los Angeles Lakers have revealed their intentions to pay homage to Jerry West, the late NBA icon, throughout the entirety of the forthcoming season. A commemorative band featuring West’s No. 44 will be prominently displayed on the left shoulder of the Lakers’ uniforms for the duration of the 2024-25 season, the team confirmed on Tuesday.

West, a beloved figure in the Lakers’ history, spent his entire 14-year Hall of Fame career with the team. Post-retirement, he continued to contribute to the Lakers as a coach and a highly effective executive. He passed away in June at the age of 86.

A Fitting Tribute to a Lakers’ Legend

Regarded as one of the best shooting guards to ever set foot on the court, West steered the Lakers to nine NBA Finals appearances and secured a championship win in the 1971-72 season. He was a 14-time All-Star and holds the eighth spot in the league’s history for his impressive average of 27.03 points per game.

Dubbed as “Mr. Clutch” for his reliable performances in crucial moments, West was honored on the All-NBA team 12 times. He was the 1969 NBA Finals MVP, a unique achievement as he was part of the losing team. This was the inaugural year of the award, and West remains the only player from a runner-up team to have won this honor.

The Architect of Lakers’ Golden Era

West played a pivotal role in shaping the “Showtime” Lakers of the 1980s, who bagged five titles under his guidance. He was instrumental in the formation of the iconic Kobe Bryant-Shaquille O’Neal duo that clinched three consecutive championships.

Opening Night to Further Honor West

Further extending their tribute to West, the Lakers announced plans to honor him on the opening night of the regular season. During their home game against the Minnesota Timberwolves on October 22, fans in attendance will receive a special West No. 44 jersey giveaway.
