White Sox Offense Stalls in 2-0 Loss to Royals

Chicago White Sox

In a game marked by pitching precision and offensive struggles, the White Sox fell to the Royals 2-0, unable to generate any momentum at the plate. The night featured two pitchers showcasing their skills, but it was Michael Wacha who emerged as the standout performer, outpacing his counterpart, Erasmo Fedde.

Fedde opened the game with a misstep, serving up a first pitch that Maikel García launched 412 feet into the stands after a brief rain delay. Despite that early mistake, Fedde settled into a rhythm, navigating through five innings with a respectable pitch count of 85, including 53 strikes. However, a second-inning jam, where he allowed the bases to load with a walk, an infield single, and a hit batter, nearly cost him more. Fortunately for Fedde, García grounded out to end the threat, and he finished the game with no further walks and just one additional hit allowed.

While Fedde managed to keep his composure, Wacha was in a league of his own. In a masterclass of efficiency, he threw 11 consecutive strikes to start the game and continued to dominate through eight innings, needing only 88 pitches—63 of which were strikes. The White Sox managed just four hits off him: doubles from Andrew Benintendi and Lenyn Sosa, and singles from Reese McGuire and Murray, who celebrated his first big league hit with a grounder up the middle.

The White Sox’s offense, though, continues to struggle. With only eight strikeouts in the game, there was a glimmer of progress, but the team has now scored just eight runs over their last six games. Adding to their woes, they have recorded three runs or fewer in seven consecutive outings, a troubling sign for a team that has only managed to find the scoreboard 11 times in their first 15 games.

In relief, Sean Newcomb delivered a perfect sixth and seventh inning, but the Royals managed to add an insurance run in the eighth off Jordan Hicks, courtesy of a García double and a couple of fly balls. The loss leaves the White Sox at 5-10 on the season, putting them on pace for just 54 wins. As they prepare for the series finale in Kansas City tomorrow at 1:10 p.m. Central, the Sox will turn to an ‘undecided’ pitcher, as Shane Smith is currently occupied in Charlotte.
