Yankees’ Ben Rice Exits Home Run Derby Early, Set to Start in All-Star Game

The New York Yankees have made swift moves following the MLB draft, quickly signing their top selection, Hunter Dietz. The left-handed pitcher from Arkansas is set to join the player development complex in Tampa. However, it’s uncertain if he will see action in any games this season, as noted by Damon Oppenheimer, who confirmed the completion of the signing.

In a moment that many would consider a dream come true, Ben Rice participated in the Home Run Derby but exited early after hitting just seven home runs in the first round. After a promising start with four homers in his first 10 swings, Rice struggled to find his rhythm, finishing with three additional homers in his final attempts. Despite the early exit, Rice, along with his father, took pride in the experience. He is now looking to make an impact in the All-Star Game tonight, where he has been announced as the starting right fielder, batting seventh behind teammate Cody Bellinger.

Rice’s selection as an All-Star was well-earned, putting critics to rest with an impressive week leading up to the event. With five home runs, 12 RBIs, and a staggering 1.577 OPS over his last seven games, he secured his second Player of the Week award for the season. This performance not only highlighted his talent but also ensured he entered the Midsummer Classic on a high note, while Nationals outfielder James Wood claimed the honors for the National League.

Both Rice and Cam Schlittler have emerged as cornerstones for the Yankees, solidifying their status as All-Stars this season. The fact that both are Boston-area natives achieving this milestone together with the Yankees adds a cinematic flair to their story. While it would have been ideal to see all Yankees players participate, Schlittler chose to prioritize rest and recovery, opting out of the game. His journey to becoming an ace on a talented pitching staff is an inspiring tale that resonates deeply within the organization.
