Detroit Lions Commit to David Montgomery with Two-Year, $18.25 Million Extension

David Montgomery Secures His Future with the Detroit Lions

Running back David Montgomery has committed his future to the Detroit Lions, signing a two-year, $18.25 million extension that will see him remain with the team through the 2027 season. The contract includes $10.5 million in guaranteed money. This contract makes Montgomery one of the top-earning running backs in the NFL, with his new earnings per year ($9.125M) ranking seventh in the league. The Lions confirmed the extension but did not provide further details on the terms.

Detroit Lions Prioritize Montgomery’s Role in the Team

Montgomery, 27, had two years remaining on his existing contract, however, the Lions chose to secure their dynamic backfield duo of Montgomery and Jahmyr Gibbs ahead of time. Montgomery currently ranks as the Lions’ second-highest rusher this season, with his 271 yards and four touchdowns coming from a team-high of 63 carries. Gibbs also impresses with his 285 rushing yards from 54 attempts and three touchdowns.

Montgomery’s Journey with the Lions

In 2023, Montgomery joined the Detroit Lions as a free agent after his first four seasons with the Chicago Bears. Since joining the Lions, he has started in every one of the 18 games he has played. After the Lions’ victorious Week 4 game against the Seattle Seahawks, Gibbs praised his partnership with Montgomery, declaring them the NFL’s top running back duo. He told reporters, “We are a versatile pair, making it tough for defenses to strategize against us. Our track record speaks for itself.”

Montgomery now holds a record for scoring a rushing touchdown in seven consecutive games, equaling the franchise record set by Billy Sims in 1980-81. Since his arrival at the Lions, he has accumulated 17 rushing TDs, ranking him fourth in the NFL during that period. Only Derrick Henry, Raheem Mostert, and Kyren Williams have achieved more.
