Riding High: Broncos Stampede Over the Panthers in a 28-14 Victory
Payton’s Mixed Feelings on the Broncos’ Performance
Sean Payton wasn’t wholly satisfied with Denver Broncos’ performance despite their 28-14 victory over the injury-plagued Carolina Panthers. There were elements of the game that delighted him, particularly the brilliant play by rookie quarterback Bo Nix, who delivered three touchdown passes and ran for an additional one. The Broncos’ defense also stood out, keeping Panthers’ Bryce Young in check for most of the day, with two interceptions and two sacks.
Nix, the rookie sensation, threw for 284 yards in what was his best outing yet. He connected with Nate Adkins and Adam Trautman for touchdowns in the second quarter, helping the Broncos build a comfortable 21-7 lead by halftime. However, two fumbles by the Broncos’ receivers, both leading to Panthers’ touchdowns, left a sour taste.
Carolina Panthers: A Tough Day on the Field
The Panthers, facing an uphill battle with 22 players on the injury list and two more injuries on Sunday, suffered their fifth consecutive defeat. Young, despite his two touchdowns and 224 yards, also threw two interceptions.
The Panthers’ misfortunes were further exacerbated by a failed fake punt attempt in the third quarter. The Broncos capitalized on this error, with Nix delivering a 9-yard TD pass to Jaleel McLaughlin just four plays later.
Young’s Performance and Future
Young, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2023 NFL draft, had a mixed outing. After a promising start with a touchdown on the first drive, he struggled to keep up the momentum. Young’s future as the starting QB has also been left uncertain, with Coach Dave Canales refusing to confirm his position for the next game.
Broncos’ Victory: Not Without Its Flaws
Despite the victory, Payton expressed dissatisfaction with the Broncos’ performance, particularly the two fumbles by the receivers. He reminded the team that such errors could prove costly in more significant games.
Broncos’ Tight Ends Shine
In a fitting celebration of the NFL’s “National Tight Ends Day,” Broncos’ tight ends Nate Adkins and Adam Trautman both scored touchdowns, their first ones of the season.
Looking Ahead
As the Panthers lick their wounds and prepare to host the New Orleans Saints next Sunday, the triumphant Broncos will face a stern test against the Baltimore Ravens.
Injury Woes Continue for the Panthers
The injury-ravaged Panthers’ woes compounded with additional injuries to Young, Diontae Johnson, Adam Thielen, Feleipe Franks, and D.J. Johnson.
Up Next
The Panthers look to bounce back against the New Orleans Saints, while the Broncos aim to continue their strong run against the Baltimore Ravens next Sunday.
