Carolina Panthers Secure Consecutive Wins with Overtime Triumph Over New York Giants
Eddy Pineiro Seals Overtime Victory with 36-yard Field Goal
In an electrifying display of football, Eddy Pineiro’s 36-yard field goal in overtime propelled the Carolina Panthers to back-to-back victories for the first time this season. The Panthers outperformed the New York Giants 20-17 in a thrilling encounter in Germany on Sunday.
The Giants (2-8) had the advantage of the coin toss at the start of overtime. However, a first-play fumble by rookie running back Tyrone Tracy turned the tide. The fumble, recovered by Josey Jewell at the 23-yard line, laid the groundwork for the Panthers’ (3-7) eventual victory.
Tracy Takes Responsibility for Fumble
“I didn’t grip the ball properly,” Tracy admitted. Describing his attempt to make a move, he highlighted the importance of ball security, accepting the blame for the fumble and the consequences it had on the game.
A’Shawn Robinson’s Pivotal Role in Panthers Victory
The fumble was forced by seasoned defensive tackle A’Shawn Robinson, a former player for the Giants. Robinson, a fervent soccer fan, thrived off the energetic atmosphere of one of Europe’s iconic soccer stadiums.
Robinson voiced his enthusiasm, adding that he had expressed his desire to his teammates to “end the game if I get a chance.” When the opportunity came, Robinson didn’t hesitate.
Giants’ Comeback and Panthers’ Response
The Giants gave a commendable fight, recovering from a 17-7 fourth-quarter deficit to force overtime on Graham Gano’s 42-yard field goal. This was Gano’s first game since September, having recovered from a hamstring injury.
Chuba Hubbard, who just signed a four-year contract extension worth $33.2 million, was instrumental for the Panthers. He made 28 carries for 153 yards and a touchdown. Bryce Young, 2023’s No. 1 overall draft pick, won consecutive games for the first time in his brief NFL career, throwing 15 for 25 for 126 yards and a touchdown pass to Ja’Tavion Sanders in the first quarter.
Coach Dave Canales Praises Team’s Effort
Coach Dave Canales commended his team’s resilience and their ability to secure wins in close games. The next hurdle for the team is maintaining this momentum through the bye week and the upcoming game against the reigning Super Bowl champions, the Kansas City Chiefs.
Giants’ Struggles Continue
The Giants, who have now lost five consecutive games, saw Daniel Jones go 22 for 37 for 190 yards with two interceptions. Tracy added 18 carries for 103 yards and a touchdown. Despite their best efforts, the Giants couldn’t overcome the Panthers’ early 10-0 lead.
Up Next
Following a bye week, the Giants will host the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Nov. 24, while the Panthers will welcome the Kansas City Chiefs on the same day.
Injury Report & Other Highlights
The Panthers had a few injuries with RB Miles Sanders and tight end Ian Thomas leaving the field and not returning. Linebacker D.J. Johnson also suffered a concussion.
As for the Giants, wide receiver Malik Nabers was evaluated for a potential concussion but was cleared to return.
The game had its share of unique moments too. The whole stadium joined in a sing-along to “Take Me Home, Country Roads,” an echo of the NFL’s first regular-season game in Germany in 2022.
