Patriots Dominate Bears in Defensive Masterclass
The New England Patriots had Caleb Williams scrambling from the onset, tightly covering his receivers, and leaving him with few options. Drake Maye relished the spectacle of his defense silencing the Chicago Bears and their star rookie quarterback. The victory that came along was the icing on the cake. In a face-off between top rookie quarterbacks, Maye outshone Williams, leading the Patriots to a 19-3 victory over the struggling Bears on Sunday.
Patriots Outplay Bears, Break Losing Streak
On the back of five scoring drives led by Maye and an intense defense that sacked Williams nine times, the Patriots (3-7) snapped their losing streak after dropping seven of their past eight games. “This is reminiscent of my training camp days,” Maye said. “They really come at you.”
The Bears’ (4-5) woes continued after their recent losses at Washington and Arizona. Managing only 142 yards and a dismal 1 of 14 on third downs, the Bears struggled against a team that shared the worst record in the NFL with six other teams. The fans’ frustrations boiled over as they called for coach Matt Eberflus’ dismissal with chants of “Fire ‘Flus!”
Bears Face Uncertain Future
Despite a 14-29 record in 2 1/2 seasons under Eberflus, Williams remains confident. “We’re aware of our potential,” Williams expressed. “We’re not performing at our best, and we’re not clicking as we should, but we have faith in each other.”
Although Maye’s performance wasn’t stellar, the 3rd overall draft pick completed 15 of 25 passes for 184 yards with a touchdown and an interception. Williams, the top pick and 2022 Heisman Trophy winner, struggled for the third consecutive game. His 16 of 30 for 120 yards contributed to the end of the Bears’ eight-game winning streak at Soldier Field.
Tough Schedule Ahead for the Bears
With six of their remaining eight games against NFC North teams, starting with Green Bay’s visit next week, the Bears face a challenging schedule. “Losing three in a row, it’s like a snowball effect,” lamented safety Kevin Byard. “We didn’t expect this, but we need to find a way out.”
Anfernee Jennings and Deatrich Wise contributed two sacks each for New England, while Joey Slye scored four field goals. “It’s a reflection of our collective play,” Wise said. “Our DBs shut down their top receivers and tight ends. It was a total defensive effort and a great team performance.”
Bears Fail to Capitalize on Opportunities
After failing to score on their first three possessions, the Bears’ frustrations were compounded when they could only manage 87 yards and went 0 for 6 on third downs, leading to loud boos from the home crowd.
Injury Report
Patriots: DT Jaquelin Roy (neck) and CB Marcellas Dial Jr. (head) suffered injuries. Deatrich Wise also needed assistance off the field in the final minute. Bears: LG Teven Jenkins (ankle) exited early in the second quarter. Doug Kramer replaced him after Jenkins got injured while blocking during a fourth-down scramble by Williams. Special teamer Tarvarius Moore left with a concussion.
What’s Next?
The Patriots host the Los Angeles Rams next Sunday, while the Bears welcome Green Bay.
