Chicago Bears Triumph Over Jacksonville Jaguars in UK Showdown
In what could be termed as a sudden twist of fate, Cole Kmet, the Chicago Bears’ tight end, faced his biggest fear in football without any prior warning. The result, however, was nothing less than spectacular. Kmet scored two touchdowns and stepped in for emergency long-snapping duties during Chicago’s impressive 35-16 victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday at London’s famous Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
Cole Kmet Emerges as Unlikely Hero
Kmet, who is the Bears’ (4-2) designated emergency long snapper, successfully snapped after every touchdown thrown by Caleb Williams and D’Andre Swift’s 1-yard dash, helping the Bears secure their third consecutive victory in almost four years. This was a role Kmet never imagined playing in the NFL. Despite his limited weekly practice snaps, he stepped up to the plate when Scott Daly, the team’s regular long snapper, was forced to leave the game due to a knee injury.
To the Bears’ relief, they didn’t have to worry about punting following their initial two drives. Besides Kmet’s commendable performance, Keenan Allen also marked his presence with two touchdown receptions. Allen’s 9-yard touchdown reception in the third quarter and his second touchdown in the fourth quarter helped the Bears establish a solid 28-10 lead.
Jaguars Struggle to Keep Pace
Despite a promising start, the Jaguars (1-5) struggled to keep up. Their opening drive ended with a field goal after Gabe Davis dropped a pass in the end zone and was penalized for a false start. Davis redeemed himself later with two second-half touchdowns from Trevor Lawrence, but it wasn’t enough to tilt the game in Jacksonville’s favor.
Chicago Bears’ Offensive Mastery
The Bears showcased their offensive prowess with Kmet breaking two tackles for a 31-yard touchdown reception in the second quarter. This gave Chicago a 7-3 lead. Williams and Kmet repeated their magic with 13 seconds left in the half, culminating an 85-yard drive that included Williams scrambling for 42 yards across two plays.
Williams, the top pick in this year’s NFL draft, finished with 226 yards from 23 of 29 passes, four TD passes, and one interception. He also rushed for 56 yards on four carries. Kmet finished with five catches for 70 yards, and Swift ran 17 times for 91 yards.
Disappointing Performance from the Jaguars
Jaguars’ coach Doug Pederson, who enjoyed the owner Shad Khan’s full support as of Saturday, described the team’s performance as “self-inflicted wounds.” Jacksonville started the third quarter with a fumble by tight end Evan Engram, who was returning from a hamstring injury. The Bears capitalized on this and scored when Allen caught his first touchdown with the team.
Upcoming Games
The Jaguars will remain in London to “host” the New England Patriots at Wembley Stadium. Meanwhile, the Bears will enjoy a bye week before facing the Washington Commanders in Week 8. This marks the first time the Bears have managed a three-game winning streak since late in the 2020 season.
