Chicago Blackhawks Implement Strategic Player Reassignments
On October 2, 2024, the Chicago Blackhawks declared the reassignment of forward Frank Nazar and defenseman Kevin Korchinski to their top minor league partner. Additionally, defenseman Louis Crevier received a placement with Rockford of the American Hockey League.
Young Prospects Sent to Junior Leagues
The Blackhawks have also decided to send 18-year-old forward AJ Spellacy, who showcased a remarkable performance during training camp after his selection in the third round of the NHL draft this year, to Windsor of the Ontario Hockey League.
Frank Nazar’s Journey
Frank Nazar, a 20-year-old forward, was picked by Chicago in the first round of the 2022 draft. He made an impactful entry into the NHL by scoring in his debut match against Carolina on April 14. However, due to a bustling offseason for the Blackhawks, Nazar’s playtime would have been restricted had he stayed with the team.
Chicago’s head coach, Luke Richardson, expressed, “It’s beneficial for Frank to have the opportunity to be the No. 1 center and to participate in the power play and penalty kill, which might be limited if he remained here. We don’t want him to sporadically play or even be sidelined as a young player.”
Kevin Korchinski’s Progress
Kevin Korchinski, a 20-year-old defenseman and the No. 7 overall pick in the 2022 draft, scored five goals and provided 10 assists in 76 games during the last season with the Blackhawks.
Richardson, a former NHL defenseman himself, said, “Kevin didn’t have the chance to refine his game last year, so this is an appropriate time for him to do so. We don’t want him to face difficulties here as a young defenseman. We’d rather see him thrive in the minor league, just as the organization envisioned when they drafted him.”
Chicago’s Camp Roster Trimmed Down
These strategic moves have brought down the Blackhawks’ camp roster count to 28, which includes 15 forwards, nine defensemen, and four goaltenders. The Blackhawks are set to kick off their season against Utah on Tuesday night.
