Justin Herbert’s Battle with Injury: A Glimmer of Hope for The Los Angeles Chargers

Recovering from a High Ankle Sprain

Despite being forced to retire early from the Chargers’ third-week encounter against the Pittsburgh Steelers due to an exacerbated high ankle sprain, star quarterback Justin Herbert expressed his determination to participate in the upcoming match against the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday.

“I’m uncertain at this point, but I’m doing all I can to be ready,” Herbert offered an update on his condition. He emphasized the importance of consistent progress, stating, “The aim is to keep making strides in the right direction with training and gym sessions. I was in a similar position last week, unsure of what lies ahead. You do what you can, take as many repetitions as possible, and then see where you land.”

A Potential Rest Period in Week 5

The Chargers are scheduled for a bye in Week 5, sparking speculation about Herbert taking a break this Sunday to rest his ankle. However, he dismissed these rumors, saying, “I don’t believe that’s the path we’re taking.”

Signs of Progress: Herbert’s Practice Participation

Herbert was a limited participant in Wednesday’s practice session, an encouraging sign as he had missed practice the previous Wednesday due to the same injury. He took part in the 7-on-7 drills and reported feeling good about his ankle.

“I’m feeling better than I was last Wednesday,” Herbert noted. “As long as we continue to make progress and avoid setbacks, I’m confident we’re heading in the right direction.”

Recalling the Injury

Herbert’s injury occurred in the third quarter of the Steelers game, which ended in a 20-10 loss for the Chargers. After being sacked by Steelers’ outside linebacker Elandon Roberts, Herbert was noticeably limping. He managed to hand off the ball to running back J.K. Dobbins on the next play but limped off the field shortly after, requiring a medical examination. He left the stadium in a walking boot but had disposed of it by Tuesday, replaced by Taylor Heinicke.

Anticipating Sunday’s Match

If Herbert takes to the field on Sunday, he may be without the support of the team’s top offensive linemen, Rashawn Slater (pectoral) and Joe Alt (MCL sprain), neither of whom participated in Wednesday’s practice. Despite this, Herbert expressed confidence in the team’s reserve players and dismissed concerns about worsening his injury on Sunday.

“I don’t believe worry accomplishes much,” he said. “I’m taking it one day at a time, assessing how it feels. If it becomes a problem, then it’s not safe or wise to play. But so far, it has been improving.”
