Mike Babcock is set to return to the NHL coaching ranks, provided the Edmonton Oilers or another team chooses to hire him. The NHL’s investigation into the circumstances surrounding Babcock’s abrupt resignation from the Columbus Blue Jackets in September 2023 has concluded, paving the way for his potential comeback.
Prompted by the Oilers’ interest, the league conducted a thorough review, issuing a statement on June 18 that clears Babcock for employment. The statement affirmed, “The League has completed its review of Mike Babcock’s tenure in Columbus, and of certain alleged conduct associated therewith. Our investigation has concluded that, even in a light least favorable to Mr. Babcock, there is no current basis to restrict his employment in the League.”
In response, the NHL Players Association (NHLPA) acknowledged the seriousness of the allegations surrounding Babcock’s conduct during his time with the Blue Jackets. They stated, “While we found the allegations of Mike Babcock’s conduct as the Columbus Blue Jackets’ head coach very concerning, the League has decided that there is no current basis on which to restrict his employment. Moving forward, we expect that Mr. Babcock will uphold the high standards required of NHL head coaches.”
The NHLPA had initially launched its own investigation in September 2023, which was prompted by allegations that led to Babcock’s resignation shortly before the NHL intervened. At that time, many believed it marked the end of Babcock’s coaching career in the NHL, but the recent findings suggest otherwise.
At 63, Babcock ranks 12th in career NHL coaching wins, boasting a Stanley Cup championship with the Detroit Red Wings and a storied international coaching resume that includes multiple gold medals with Team Canada in the Olympics, world championships, and world junior championships.
Babcock’s departure from Columbus stemmed from accusations of violating players’ privacy during one-on-one meetings. Allegations included pressuring players to share personal photos from their cellphones, which he claimed was a method to get to know his new team. However, many players interpreted his actions differently.
During the NHLPA’s investigation, several Blue Jackets players expressed discomfort with Babcock’s methods. Reports indicated that he had scrolled through the phone of a promising young prospect for an extended period, which made the player feel uneasy. Ultimately, Babcock resigned just days before training camp in 2023, leading to a joint press conference by former Blue Jackets president of hockey operations John Davidson and former general manager Jarmo Kekalainen, who apologized to players affected by Babcock’s tactics and acknowledged the hiring as a misstep.
Now, with the NHL’s clearance, the door is open for Babcock’s return, should the Oilers or another franchise decide to bring him on board.
