Changes in New England Patriots’ Backfield: A Shift in Running Back Role
Jerod Mayo Announces Team Changes
The New England Patriots’ head coach, Jerod Mayo, recently announced a major shift in the team’s lineup during the Patriots All-Access television show aired this past Friday night. Rhamondre Stevenson, who has unfortunately fumbled in all of the first four games, will no longer be the starting running back.
A Strategic Change in Running Back Position
Coach Mayo openly discussed the situation with Stevenson, emphasizing the importance of ball protection. While Stevenson will still participate in the games, he will not be the starting running back. In Stevenson’s place, five-year veteran Antonio Gibson is projected to take the leading role as the Patriots host the Miami Dolphins this Sunday.
Mayo had previously hinted at this shift in the team’s strategy. He passionately stated, “We can’t preach ‘ball security is job security’ and still have him (Stevenson) out there the majority of the time.” He believes this resolute decision sends a powerful message to all players about the team’s commitment to a winning strategy.
Performance Statistics of the Players
In the first four games, the 6-foot, 227-pound Stevenson had 159 snaps and gained 267 yards from 65 carries, scoring two touchdowns, and made nine receptions for 34 yards. On the other hand, Gibson, who weighs 228 pounds and also stands 6 feet tall, has been a reliable backup, playing 71 snaps, accumulating 155 yards on 29 carries, and making seven receptions for 82 yards.
Stevenson was mentally prepared for the shift, expressing his self-criticism over his performance. He told reporters, “It’s very simple: I just have to hold on to the ball and have that mentality to come up with the ball every time. It’s my job to do that and I haven’t been doing it well.”
