Steelers’ Promising Newbie Troy Fautanu Faces Uncertain Future Following Knee Injury
Fautanu’s Injury: A Blow to the Steelers
In an unexpected twist, the Pittsburgh Steelers’ promising right tackle, Troy Fautanu, suffered a knee injury during Friday’s practice session. The injury has left him benched indefinitely, according to sources. Fautanu, the Steelers’ first-round pick of the 2024 NFL draft, was poised to make his second professional start against the Los Angeles Chargers on the following Sunday.
Broderick Jones, Fautanu’s fellow tackle, revealed that Fautanu experienced “a minor hiccup” during Friday’s training and would undergo an MRI scan to determine the scope of his injury. “His status is still unclear,” Jones commented on Fautanu’s condition. “I’ve stepped in for him for now, and we’re awaiting the results of his MRI to plan our next steps.”
Steelers Downgrade Fautanu’s Status for the Upcoming Game
On Saturday, following the unexpected incident, the Steelers officially ruled Fautanu out for the weekend game against the Chargers.
Opportunity Knocks for Jones
With Fautanu sidelined, Jones, who was picked by the Steelers as the 14th overall in the 2023 draft, will seize this opportunity to prove himself following a lackluster stint as a substitute against the Denver Broncos. “This isn’t unfamiliar territory for me. It isn’t magical, so I just have to step up and perform when my name is called,” Jones stated.
Fautanu’s Injury Adds to Steelers’ Woes
Fautanu’s injury marks the third significant setback for the Steelers’ offensive line this season. Center Nate Herbig is ruled out for the rest of the season due to a rotator cuff tear, while veteran guard Isaac Seumalo has missed the first two weeks following a pectoral injury in training. Seumalo will also be absent from Sunday’s game against the Chargers.
Fautanu’s Previous Injury and Tomlin’s Praises
Fautanu previously suffered an MCL sprain during the Steelers’ first preseason game in August, which resulted in him missing the rest of the preseason. Despite this, coach Mike Tomlin expressed admiration for the work displayed by his 20th overall pick, highlighting it as a reason behind Fautanu being ready to start, prior to his recent injury. “Troy has been on fire,” Tomlin acknowledged earlier this week. “I typically don’t comment extensively on rookies during the preseason, but my decision to include him in the lineup clearly reflects my evaluation of his contribution to the team’s development.”
